Seventh grade science teachers Mrs. Sandy Thorson and Mrs. Dana Quinley work hard to move beyond the textbook to give students exciting hands-on learning opportunities.
Students were investigating energy, temperature, energy transformations, and the kinetic theory of matter using glow sticks. The glow sticks were activated, then placed in three different temperatures of water. Prior to placing the glow sticks in the water, students took the water temperature--in Celsius scale. No Fahrenheit readings allowed in science class! Thermometers have both scales on them, so students were encouraged to look at both temperatures so they can start equating the two in their minds.
Undoubtedly, this simple investigation rendered fascinating glowing results.
